The Organic Coffee Industry

For almost a decade now, organic food has continually been a source of controversy in the food industry. Organic, as defined by experts, is food produce that does not undergo off-farm product intervention such as toxic pesticides and other similar chemicals. It also has to be grown in organically sustainable soils free from harmful radicals. Over the years, various third party accreditation organizations have certified various food products as "certified organic" based on the standards set for a produce to be considered organic. Although there is no definitive proof that may lead to concrete determination of whether organic food contributes to the over-health status of an individual, tests of the pesticides being used as fertilizers for various farm produce clearly indicate that these toxic chemicals can lead to various health ailments. Thus, growers and other farm practictioners, in their advocacy towards clean living, unanimously agreed that once a farm produce is exposed to these health hazards, intake of the same would prove to be toxic in the long run. To avoid further exposure, prevention was their way of providing the public healthy farm products, which includes coffee among others.

The Organic Coffee

Organic coffee includes products certified and grown based on widely accepted standards set forth by these federally-recognized third party accreditation organizations. For a coffee produce to be considered and certified as organic, the following criteria should be met: (1) the soil in which the coffeebeans are grown should have not used fertilizers that contain toxic chemicals; (2) the water used should also be free of harmful chemicals; (3) the fertilizers used should be composite organics such as composted coffee pulp; (4) processing of the coffeebean should not have undergone intervention with artificial products including preservatives. Certification also includes inspection of farm facilities and soil. Once met, such coffeebean produce can be certified organic coffee and thus can be sold to the public with the seal of approval by the certifying agency.

Although a debate in regards to pricing of such organic coffee has considerably increased, coffee growers and producers, including wholesalers and retailers, have time and again reiterated that they are actually pricing organic coffee at a level that reflects their price structures.
